That's awesome Shorty! It's not easy to get jobs like that right now. I was a history major in college myself so I approve of your line of work

What is your specialty or area of focus?

Early 20th Century US, though my gig will require me to teach any and all areas of history.

Very cool! I'm not surprised, I know that happens to professors a lot.

The market is very tough. We had a tour of high school kids come through this week for a career day sort of event. I was operating a backhoe as part of the show and tell q and a portion of the tour. It was sort of sad when the teacher asked me what my salary was. When I told him he told the kids "I've got a Masters Degree and he makes significantly more money than I do.".

Shorty Long, you really are a lucky person.  Not only do you get to teach and research a really interesting slice of history, as a tenured academic you will have the freedom to speak your mind.

The latter part of the equation is even more endangered than jobs in the humanities and, in my view, worth more far more than a plush corner office and executive bonus.

I raise my glass (and a footnote-heavy book) to you.

A wildfire blew through yesterday. Thus was the closest we've experienced & we were told to be ready to evacuate. Thankfully it missed our house. Fire crews had a helicopter & two planes dropping water & retardant. They did a great job.

Wow! That is disturbingly close! You weren't kidding when you said you were ready to evacuate. Glad to know that you're OK.
