Have now seen several pairs of 1901-1913 501's on various sites/in reference books, with a 'Solide' buckle on the cinch. The pairs from around the 1890's have the earlier plain wire buckles, so lm assuming the change in buckle type/suppliers must have been around 1900?

Sansome? Could you help me out here?

Still no hard data- but I suspect Levi added a back pocket- as early as 1899

Thanks for the help with the buckle.
I hope to get back to the discussion on the 1922-36 era 501's after seeing those 1930's pair from Greeperfierce.

So 1899 is the possible date for the additional back pocket? At least Mr. Strauss was alive to see the improvement?

It's possible- the 1901 catalog lists 2 hip pockets- catalog was put together in 1900- so we can assume in 1900- they had 2 hip pockets- what we're looking for is a #2 with a type 4 two horse brand.....we know type 5 two horse brand appears in 1900 and a type 4 2 horse brand was still being used in December 1898......mining in the west is really weak in the late 1890's- so 1897-1900 can be found in just a handful of spots.

Sorry, nothing to add.  Just absorbing the goodness.
My coat has nine buttons, but I always fascinate.

Nowt wrong with a bit of vintage on a Sunday mate.

Whatever's left of them after Jack's trashed 'em, what will you do - put them in a frame?*

(*in the spare room of course).
