2 back pockets- and a leg tool pocket, interesting.
Steinhart out of San Francisco was the only pant we
Ever found with 2 back pockets in the 1880’s.

Young men. Doesn't look like candle wax on those jeans, maybe cement?

Concerning belt loops on military trousers, according to illustrations in Randy Steffen's The Horse Soldier (Volume III), belt loops first appeared on issue olive drab, khaki and sky blue trousers with the 1902 pattern, but not on white trousers. They could easily have been added to earlier pattern uniform trousers or to privately purchased garments. Belts, however, of various widths and styles had long been on issue, typically worn over coats and sometimes just with trousers, especially if they held equipment. I was unable to find a reference to waist belts (that is, a belt just for holding up the trousers) but narrow web belts had definitely appeared by 1917.

One should not assume that all the little details are always mentioned in regulations nor that the regulations are carefully adhered to. Likewise, small changes in the uniforms can be particularly difficult to pin down in official references. But I suppose that's part of what makes this stuff interesting.

Baseball Team, 1892 with belt loops.

I went down the rabbit hole of belt loop research and it seems that belt loops first showed up for sports (tennis, golf, baseball) and later the loops followed to pants/trousers.

There was some in between belt usage just over the pants (without loops) and using different attachments/holders.

It's interesting that Levi's waited until 1922 to add belt loops. But was that just adding them to the 501 model? Were there Levi's with belt loops before 1922?

Nice work^^^ In roughly 26 years ,I’ve been digging for clothing, we haven’t come up with anything that resembles a belt loop....seems that you nailed its first real use.
