This is where I’ll post random items from the 1800’s
Mining, farming, logging, whatever
It doesn’t have to be from the 1800’s

We found a 1880’s suspenders clasp, 2 days ago, it’s way cooler than I initially thought.

Spent yesterday at my boss's property, most of the day we were  looking for new spots.
After night fall, i crawled into a rat hole, it was a room four feet tall- 6feet long and 5 wide.
I moved a few rocks- then trash

We have a lot of old things in this house (including me) but little of things that would be of interest here. I think one interesting thing, though, might be this.

When my father passed away over twenty years ago, I inherited a cedar chest (and little else). It was a time capsule from around 1950. That was when my mother had a serious stroke, which left her as an invalid until she died. One item was a newspaper from a small town in southern West Virginia. A couple of things illustrate how times have changed. One was an obituary from someone who was in their 80s. The cause of death was given as "extreme old age." Another was a notice about letting contracts for construction of a one-room school. Nowadays, they just use busses with four-wheel drive.

I never thought I was only 30 years away, from being extreme old age- thanks for sharing.

Sorry for the late comment but those German language pages are interesting, if rather difficult to read. It's the Gothic script more than anything. Modern day Germans supposedly even find it difficult to read, even though it was still commonly used into the 1940s.

German was widely spoken in this country at one time and even the Declaration of Independence was printed in German at the same time it was printed and published in English. These days, it's still spoken in a few places, although it's a specific dialect of German. Use of German in this country fell off with WWI. There's still Spanish, of course. New World Spanish, they call it.

I have a German deli 3 miles from my house, it’s been open since the 70’s- it’s still open, but the original German owner
Sold the business 2 years back...More often than not, you would see old German folks- speaking in their native tongue to the owner...Like you said- it’s going away in this country, except for the few pockets here and there.
