Missed this reply. thanks for the offer, I suppose too late now but I would go for standard semi-dress in brown or black 10E. Quite fancy a pair of Danner Light now that I an thousands of miles away from PDX...

Animal Traffic in Portland, Oregon is going out of business and all footwear is on sale. Whites and Red Wings are 50% off!!! Thorogoods are 25% off. Just wanted to give you all a heads up. Oh yeah, they also sell women’s Red Wings and the last day they are open is August 16th.

Here are my White's. Bought from illumine8m a while back. I've been wearing them out in the field recently where they tend to pick up a layer of fine dust that really sticks. Today they got cleaned & polished. They are not the fanciest but I have to say these boots are really easy to wear.

Ooms, as it happens yes I am familiar with the Cairngorm by way of the Pennine IIR, basically the boot version on the same last, 4436. I had a pair for a while in a UK size 9.

It was a couple of years ago now, but as I recall the boots really weren't a particularly large fit at all.

If your familiar with Trickers 4444 (even in standard 5 width) for example in the same size the Trickers fit larger. I don't remember the Cheaney being a particularly long last and for a G width I don't think it fits notably wide either. So unless you have slim feet I wouldn't let that affect your decision.

Actually, I'm not sure I'm in favour of whole size conversions between US and UK sizing - I know Red Wing as an example state this on their tags but I'm not overly convinced. Trickers in comparison suggest only a half size in their footwear which I think is probably more realistic. I size at a US9.5 D/E on a Brannock (perhaps a shade over) calibrated for American shoe size, and would take a UK9 in the Trickers 4497 leaning towards the 6 width. Similarly I definitely would not size down to a UK8.5 in the Pennine (or Cairngorm).

Difficult to give advice on shoe sizing other than experiences, so perhaps you could ask the retailer to measure heel to toe under the sole and go by length compared to what else fits you well - I'd suggest the width will be fine in this case. As they're veldtschoen and not welted the midsole lip isn't all that proud of the uppers compared to say Whites or even Trickers.

Does this help much or just make it more confused? I think I'm basically suggesting the boots are TTS and only 1⁄2 size difference....

where's hoggy?

i finally bought the cairngorms earlier this year, fit them at the shop, and got them in 8.5 UK. they fit perfect.

which meant that i went with my usual US size in other shoes, instead of following the cheaney website's advice of going down a full size from the US size to the UK size.

(just in case anyone needs this size advice)
