I keep seeing these 'oldest trousers in the world' (about 3000 years old apparently) on twitter, and have to say I'd happily wear a repro.

Yes exactly!
I was watching a documentary on Disfarmer, and they mention this.
Exposure on the old cameras was long so they had to hold an expression for a long time, so as you said the easiest expression to hold was a more stern serious expression.

Plus I think with those early cameras people had to freeze for a couple of seconds to avoid blur, hence the stark, stern expressions. It was easier to do that than hold a smile perhaps.

Did you notice the numbers on most of these guys, criminals...drunken gamblers
Most of the old photos are working class- and those were hard days.

If we had a thread for peeps in their Sunday best...probably wouldn’t see all the crazy eyes
